7 tips for your first week at work

So you’ve aced the application process and scored a job. The next step is to make sure your first week is a smashing success.
Drawing on the seven skills employers look for in employees – positive attitude, communication, thinking skills, teamwork, willingness to learn, self-management, and resilience – we’ve got some handy tips to help you stress less and make an awesome first impression on your new boss and workmates.
1. Show up ready to work
It might sound obvious, but make sure you show up every day not only with a positive attitude but also dressed correctly and with the right gear. Plus, it always makes a good impression when you show up a little bit early. Aim to be there about 10 minutes before you’re meant to start, but don’t show up too early.
2. Get to know your workplace
It’s important to get to know what the culture of your workplace is like and what’s expected of you. Adjusting to your new work life (or workplace) can take some time. If things get hard don’t give up.
3. Get to know your workmates
You’re going to be spending a lot of time with people you probably wouldn’t normally. In your first week make an effort to get to know your workmates. To be a good team player it’s important to have good relationships with your co-workers.
4. Find a mentor and be willing to learn
One of the key skills employers look for in their workers is a willingness to learn. If it’s your first week on the job no one’s expecting you to know how to do it all, but they are expecting you to be keen to learn. If you can, find a mentor on the staff who can help you to settle in.
5. Listen, and ask questions
During your first week it’s important to pay attention to everything you’re told. If you’re unsure of something, or forget something, don’t be afraid to ask questions.
6. Take the initiative and be proactive
Employers love it when workers show initiative. So, right from your first day don’t wait around to be told what to do – if you see something that needs doing, just do it. If you’re not sure what to do, just ask.
7. Don't be afraid to make mistakes
Everybody makes mistakes, but that doesn’t mean it's game over. Fix the mistake if you can and apologise if you need to. Now you will know what to do, or what not to do, next time.
