What can I expect out of this qualification?

Graduates of the Master of Nursing Practice programme will demonstrate the competencies for the registered nurse scope of practice and be eligible to apply for registration with the Nursing Council of New Zealand (Te Kaunihera Tapuhi o Aotearoa). They will be able to work as registered nurses, employed in a diverse range of practice settings across the health care continuum. They will also be eligible to pursue further postgraduate study, undertake advanced nursing practice programmes and apply for enrolment in doctoral research studies.

Minimum requirements

Entry to the programme will be open to graduates with a bachelor s degree with an average grade of at least B+ in the final year of study. Applicants may be asked to attend an interview to ensure that they have both the academic and personal qualities to succeed in the programme and practice as registered nurses. Candidates will be assessed for their ability to make ethical judgements and solve problems. This includes meeting the Fitness for registration criteria in Section 16 of the Health Practitioners Competence Assurance Act 2003. Students whose undergraduate qualification is from outside health or sciences, may need to complete a formal bridging programme providing basic concepts in chemistry, anatomy and physiology. This will be assessed as part of the application process and selection interview. Prospective applicants will also need to be of good health and character, these being requirements of the Nursing Council of New Zealand (Te Kaunihera Tapuhi o Aotearoa) for registration. The good character assessment will be undertaken through the interview, identity confirmation, a police vet and referee reports sufficient to establish the prospective student as safe to practice with children, as required by the Children s (Requirements for Safety Checks of Children s Workers) Regulations 2015. Other requirements for students include that they must: be able to travel to clinical placements have appropriate immunisation status have completed a certified Basic Life Support course.
