Entry requirements

Normally the minimum qualification for entry for a student less than 20 years of age is three C level passes in University Bursaries exam or equivalent, or University Entrance Standard (set by NZQA), or completion of a recognised Certificate in Foundation Studies. Entrants who are over twenty years of age will be considered for entry if their record of experience and study demonstrates a high degree of likelihood of success in the course of teacher preparation. A student who has successfully completed the first year of the Diploma of Teaching programme may request a transfer into the Degree programme at the start of their second year. Character suitability must be verified through 2 confidential referee reports and The New Zealand Police and/or Department for Courts check to ensure the applicant has no undeclared criminal convictions. What can I expect out of this qualification?

The Degree programme has been designed to meet the requirements for initial teacher registration. The early childhood programme prepares students who wish to qualify to teach in an early childhood setting. The 0-8 years programme prepares students who wish to qualify for teaching at both early childhood and early primary levels. The primary three year programme provides training for students to teach in the primary and intermediate sector, years 1-8 (children ranging in ages from 5 to 13 years). The primary two year programme is for students who have already completed a degree, or hold a completed G3 qualification for teaching in primary schools. The primary bilingual programme prepares students to be able to teach in classrooms using both English and Maori. This allows for a graduated increase in the use of Te Reo Maori as a medium of instruction and provides opportunity for students to pursue their study of Te Reo Maori me ona Tikanga Maori throughout the course of training. The primary to year 10 programme is a two year programme for students who have already completed a degree, or hold a completed G3 qualification for teaching in primary or secondary schools to year 10.
