Entry requirements

Applicants undergo a comprehensive screening and interview process to determine that the following admission requirements are met:

English Language Competence
Prior to entry, candidates for must demonstrate English language competency by providing one of the Council's approved evidence of English language competencies.
See Appendix 1 Programme Regulations 2022 for full details of the English language competency requirements.

Numeracy & Literacy Competence
In order to have confidence that applicants will enter the course with the required level of numeracy and literacy required, a reading, writing and numeracy test will be undertaken as part of the application process. This test will be done onsite in test conditions before an interview or by distance with an invigilator if the interview is an online one. Both these tests are designed to meet the requirement for University Entrance levels for numeracy (NZC Level 6) and literacy (NZC Level 7). Students under 20 years of age must also have achieved University Entrance or an equivalent.

Police Clearance Certificate
All applicants must give permission to BTI to request a Police Clearance Certificate and undergo an interview to ensure they met the Children's Act 2014 safety checks as identified in the BTI SA.36 Children's Act 2014 - Safety Checks policy.

Disposition to Teach
All applicants must provide 3 referee reports that attest to their suitability to teach, sign the 'Teacher Education Student Declaration' attesting to their mental and physical fitness for teaching, and immediately disclose any matters which may impact on their ability to register as a teacher, including mental and physical fitness that arise while enrolled in the programme.
All applicants undergo an interview to establish a disposition to teach and potential to meet the Teaching Council of Aotearoa's Code of Professional Responsibility and Standards for the Teaching Profession.

What can I expect out of this qualification?

The BTI Bachelor of Education (Teaching) Primary degree programme prepares graduate teachers to effectively design and implement holistic, quality education for students from Year 0/1 to 8 in English-medium schools. This preparation is consistent with biblical worldview perspectives, the New Zealand Curriculum, and the Teaching Council of Aotearoa New Zealand's Code of Professional Responsibility and Standards for the Teaching Profession. The programme's foundational Conceptual Framework provides the basis for coherence across courses within the programme which seeks to nurture the hearts, minds and practice of pre-service educators conducive to developing wise educators who are gracious, secure and teachable and whose teaching is relational, responsive and transformative. Pre-service teachers develop professional knowledge and practice related to primary teaching using the New Zealand Curriculum, and are able to:
* demonstrate intellectual independence, critical thinking and analytic rigour
* engage in self-directed learning
* demonstrate knowledge and skills related to the ideas, principles, concepts, chief research methods and problem-solving
techniques of a recognised major subject
* demonstrate the skills needed to acquire, understand and assess information from a range of sources
* demonstrate communication and collaborative skills.
