What can I expect out of this qualification?
The Graduate Diploma in Education (Secondary) is a one-year professional graduate diploma (level 7). The graduate diploma is delivered as a special character Christian teacher education programme that integrates distinctively Freirean conception of teaching and learning with the Code and Standards of the Teaching Profession (with Support). The delivery of the degree is site-based (Waitakere, Christchurch) with modes: face to face delivery, blended learning, school-based learning, field-based components and practicum. The aim of this programme is to provide secondary, middle, intermediate and area schools in the state, integrated and private sectors, with graduates who meet the Code and Standards for the Teaching Profession. Such graduates have a robust understanding of curriculum, teaching and learning, reflection and research as a teacher, Te Tiriti o Waitangi, cultural responsiveness particularly for Māori and Pacific ākonga, and their own identities and Christian faith. This programme will be suited to those who have the qualifications and/or experience required of a secondary teacher and who will be capable of professional teaching practice and developing collaborative relationships with learners and colleagues.

Minimum requirements
General Admission Requirements Graduate Diploma in Education (Secondary) applicants must provide evidence of: * An appropriate bachelor's degree at Level 7 on the New Zealand Qualifications Framework and/or postgraduate qualification, and * A body of knowledge from Levels 5 to 7 or higher in support of New Zealand Curriculum learning areas for at least one Year 7-10 teaching subject/s and at least one Year 11-13 teaching subject/s Requirements for Entry into the Programme All applicants are required as part of the application process to arrange for two confidential written referee reports to be sent directly to Laidlaw College. All applicants are required to have a visual interview by panel. The panel should include a minimum of a runanga delegate, member of the teaching profession, and a Laidlaw teacher educator. The interview determines the applicant's: a. Disposition to teach, through judging their ability to meet the values that underpin Our Code Our Standards; b. Ability to meet the Code of Professional Responsibility (in a supported environment); c. Vulnerable Children's Act risk assessment (interview component); and, d. Other relevant matters. All applicants are required to undergo a literacy and numeracy assessment. Te Reo Mäori competency Candidates selected for entry into Laidlaw College Bachelor of Education (Primary) will be assessed on their te reo Mäori competency during the first semester of study in order to provide adequate support. Police clearance must be obtained. More detailed entry reqs in regulations.
