About the course

What can I expect out of this qualification?

This qualification provides the commercial road transport industry with people who have the knowledge and skills required to safely and competently operate heavy rigid vehicles or heavy combination vehicles.

The qualification is designed for new or current heavy vehicle drivers who wish to gain skills and knowledge beyond those required to be a licence holder.

Graduates will be able to work under limited supervision.

This qualification does not permit the holder to drive a motor vehicle on New Zealand roads without a current relevant driver licence issued by the New Zealand Transport Agency Waka Kotahi (NZTA).

Entry Requirements

Minimum requirements

Brief Entry Requirements (255 characters maximum) Must hold the appropriate Full New Zealand Drivers Licence for the mandatory NZTA period. (3 or 6 months) Must have had a medical within 60 days prior to the course starting to show applicant is physically fit. NCEA Level 1 in English and Maths, or equivalent skill. No international enrolments. Applicants whose English is not their first language, evidence of language competency may be required. NOTE: Stand down period for applicants (see detailed requirements) Although not mandatory, it is preferred that all applicants have some level of ability to drive a manual gearshift prior to starting the programme.
