About the course

What can I expect out of this qualification?

The purpose of this qualification is to provide the marine industry with people who have the knowledge and skills to work in a team, unsupervised, to refit or build new vessels.

This is an entry level qualification for people intending to enter or who are already working in the boat building sector, in the refit and construction of vessels.

This qualification includes strands that recognise specific knowledge and practical skills for refit or building new alloy, composite, steel, and wooden boats.

Graduates will have the specialised knowledge and skills for refit and construct vessels in either alloy, composites, steel, or wood, dependent upon which strand is achieved.

Minimum requirements

General requirements * applicant must be employed in the marine or composite industry. * minimum of 16 years of age * attained NCEA Level 2 or must be able to demonstrate equivalent knowledge and skills * New Zealand citizen, resident visa, or work visa English language requirements Applicant whose first language is not English, required to provide any of the following: * evidence of successful completion of at least five years of secondary education from a country where the student was taught using English as medium of instruction * successful completion of vocational certificate or diploma, of which the medium of instruction taught in English. * IELTS at least 5.0 overall score or equivalent Rule 18 of the NZQA Programme Approval and Accreditation Rules 2021 does not apply to these transitional programmes approved through to 31 December 2023, as they are funded as if under the Industry Training and Apprenticeship Act 1992 - repealed under the Education (Vocational Education and Training Reform) Amendment Act 2020 - until such time as a Unified Funding Scheme is in place. It is also for this reason that MAST Academy may enrol trainees working in New Zealand under work visas without having to be a signatory to the Education (Pastoral Care of International Students) Code of Practice
