About the course

What can I expect out of this qualification?

The Bachelor of Animation is designed to deliver an industry-aligned, adaptive animation curriculum. This curriculum aims to develop in learners: understanding of, appreciation for, and proficiency in the craft of animated storytelling; art and design skills for visual communication; critical investigative, reflective, ethical and transdisciplinary thinking skills; effective studio practice, project-management, communication and business skills; proficiency in a range of traditional, contemporary and emerging technologies for animation; and an understanding of animation history, media theory and other critical contexts influencing contemporary practice. The Bachelor of Animation curriculum provides opportunities for learners to develop a T-shaped skillset in animation, with generalist foundations and specialism in a major, and also prepares them for study at Honours level through the development of academic and research skills. The Bachelor degree also aims to foster students' creative and cultural identities throughout this process.

Minimum requirements

Entry requirements apply regardless of whether the programme is offered on a full-time or part-time basis. For students to be eligible for entry into the programme, the following criteria must be met: Portfolios All applicants must provide evidence of creative abilities and potential in the form of a portfolio. a good portfolio may contain a variety of work; animations, sketches, drawings, painting, mixed media, multimedia, photography, sculpture, etc.; portfolio specifications and requirements will be provided to all applicants to assist in their construction. General Admission Category To be considered for general admission, applicants must: Hold NCEA University Entrance or equivalent CIE/IB grades (preferably including a minimum of 24 NCEA credits at Level 3 in practical art, design or technology subjects), or; An appropriate qualification from an overseas secondary school or tertiary institution, deemed by Animation College to be sufficient for admission into a bachelor programme, or; have successfully completed an Animation College Qualification, Level 6 or higher. Discretionary Admission Category Applicants who do not meet requirements for general admission, and are at least 16 and under age 20, may apply for discretionary admission. Discretionary admission applicants should: have reached a significant level of achievement in year 12, or; have successfully completed a relevant foundation programme or tertiary qualification; all portfolios should show significant art and design skills and experience (applicants may be asked to attend an interview to ascertain their suitability for admission in some cases). Special Admission Category Applicants who do not meet requirements for general admission, are age 20 or more, are New Zealand residents or permanent residents, and have relevant experience and skills may apply for special admission.
