About the course

What can I expect out of this qualification?

The purpose of this qualification is to provide the maritime industry with people who have the skills and knowledge required by the International Convention on Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers (STCW) and International Convention on Standards of Training Certification and Watchkeeping for Fishing Vessel Personnel (STCW-F) to act independently under broad guidance as a watchkeeper on a commercial vessel and as a mate on a fishing vessel.

The Fishing strand is for people intending to act as Mate on fishing vessels less than 45 metres, operating within coastal and off-shore limits under the STCW-F.

The Watchkeeper strand is for people intending to act as Watchkeeper Deck on commercial vessels < 500GT operating within coastal and offshore limits under the International Convention on STCW.

Entry Requirements

Minimum requirements

Academic requirements: There are no minimum academic requirements for entry. Other requirements: Applicants will be made aware that they must meet the full MNZ sea time, medical and eyesight requirements prior to commencing this programme if they wish to be eligible for the MNZ licence which this programme contributes towards. Applicants will be referred to the MNZ guidelines Mate Fishing Vessel Limited (MFV) with the Fishing Strand; or Watchkeeper Deck on ships less than 500 GT in a near coastal area (Watchkeeper Deck <500 GT NC). which can be found on the www.maritimenz.govt.New Zealand website.
