About the course
What can I expect out of this qualification?
The purpose of this qualification is to provide the maritime industry with people who have the skills and knowledge required by the International Convention on Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers (STCW) and International Convention on Standards of Training Certification and Watchkeeping for Fishing Vessel Personnel (STCW-F) to act independently under broad guidance as a watchkeeper on a commercial vessel and as a mate on a fishing vessel.
The Fishing strand is for people intending to act as Mate on fishing vessels less than 45 metres, operating within coastal and off-shore limits under the STCW-F.
The Watchkeeper strand is for people intending to act as Watchkeeper Deck on commercial vessels < 500GT operating within coastal and offshore limits under the International Convention on STCW.

Entry Requirements
Minimum requirements
There are no minimum academic requirements. Applicants for Maritime Operations- Skipper Fishing Vessel Limited/ Master 500t Near Coastal - must hold either Mate FV Limited or Watchkeeper Deck 500t Near Coastal. Applicants should be aware that there are MNZ sea time, medical and eyesight requirements for the MNZ licence which their programme contributes towards. Applicants should refer to www.maritimenz.govt.nz website. In order to undertake the Fire Training Courses (FAC303 and/ or FFT511) Applicants must also: * Be physically fit and capable of participating in the practical training component * Students must provide a Medical Certificate issued by a General Practitioner, or provide a Seafarers Medical Certificate or equivalent.
