About the course

What can I expect out of this qualification?

This entry-level qualification provides the maritime industry with people who have the skills and knowledge required by the International Convention on Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers (STCW) to work with limited supervision as crew on vessels operating in unlimited waters.
The Deck Crewing and Engineering strands meet the competency standards for Deck Watch Rating and Engine-room Watch Rating required under STCW and as specified in the Maritime NZ Seafarer Certification and Operational Limits Framework.
The Passenger Services strand is for crew responsible for passenger welfare on large passenger vessels who require a STCW Basic certificate to assist in the event of maritime emergencies.
The Superyacht strand is for people intending to crew on superyachts both in New Zealand waters and internationally where a STCW Basic certificate is required.

Entry Requirements

Minimum requirements

Academic requirements: 10 NCEA Level 1 literacy credits and 10 NCEA Level 1 numeracy credits. Note: If applicants have undertaken a qualification or examination other than NCEA (e.g. International Baccalaureate, Cambridge Examination), NMIT will assess this for academic entry equivalence. Alternative requirements: Applicants (including those over 20 years of age) who are unable to evidence that they meet Academic Entry Requirements, but who can demonstrate acquired skills for tertiary study gained through study, work and/or life experience, may be approved for alternative entry by the Curriculum Manager or delegate. English language requirements: If English is not the applicant s first language, applicants will need to provide a result from a test or qualification on the acceptable alternatives English Proficiency Outcomes Table: IELTS 5.0 Academic (no lower than 5.0 in each band). Note: Applicants who do not have evidence of English language skills and are a New Zealand citizen or permanent resident, may contact NMIT for an assessment. Applicants who have achieved NCEA Level 3 University Entrance requirements are not required to provide evidence of English language skills. IELTS scores used must be taken from a single IELTS Test Report Form and are valid for two years from the date of the test. Other requirements: Students must be at least 18 years of age at the time of attending the PSI311 Professional Superyacht Interior Training course.
